Here, as a teacher, you can use a poster for the classroom where the students themselves can make a self-assessment after each lesson or school day.
Students in primary school, from year 1 to year 6, can use the poster “Rate yourself” to take responsibility for their own learning by doing a self-assessment after the end of the lesson or the end of the school day.
The self-assessment is based on the poster “Rate yourself” with three different steps that resemble a traffic light with associated colors and emotions. For each step, there are four different assessment steps based on how the lesson or school day went.
Right before the end of the lesson or the end of the school day, you as a teacher can set aside about five minutes. Write a short assessment on the board about how you think the students as a group have worked during the lesson or throughout the school day. Also draw the associated color and feeling that symbolizes your evaluation of the class.
At the same time, the students can each individually write a short evaluation of about two sentences about their own performance during the lesson. Use the associated color and symbol to mark your evaluation.
Before students collect, they can come up to you and show what they have written. Sometimes it may be necessary for you and the student to talk about what has been written, while in other cases it may be enough to simply confirm their judgment.
If you have older students from about year 3 and up to year 6, you as a teacher can also do a weekly evaluation where you as a teacher take pictures of your evaluations during the week based on the class’s joint performance, this can then be turned into statistics on the board. Perhaps it is also something that can be included in future weekly letters.
Just remember not to let the weekly letter have too much negativity, as it takes eight positives to outweigh one negative.
This poster is also available in Swedish “Bedöm dig själv”.
